Equifax Data Breach of 143 Million U.S. Consumers
As you are no doubt aware, Equifax systems were struck by a cybersecurity breach that affected 143 million U.S. consumers, one of the largest in history. CESFCU is monitoring the situation and assessing how the breach impacts our members.
The Equifax breach made vulnerable consumers' Social Security numbers, birth dates and home addresses, plus some driver's license numbers. Hackers are said to have obtained 209,000 consumers' credit card numbers and credit dispute documents for as many as 182,000 others. Equifax has alleged that the breach was discovered July 29, and they have now contained it.
We want you to know that CESFCU is constantly coordinating and performing due diligence, and our management and board leadership have discussed the issue of breaches since the run on them over the last several years. We assure you we are doing our utmost to ensure that your data at CESFCU is protected.
Unfortunately, consumers don't really have a choice about whether to share their data with Equifax or the other big credit bureaus. The fact that Americans are all subject to Equifax makes the company's failure to protect people's data especially galling. However, there are some things you can do.
If you think your credit information has been compromised, there are a number of resources you can access for specific direction on what you can do, and you can find them here.
